Sebastian Merz

Sebastian MerzSebastian Merz is the Associate Director for the HSRP. He contributes analysis and writing to the Human Security Report, plans and coordinates the HSRP’s research activities, and manages the work of the data department. In addition, Sebastian liaises with collaborating academic institutions and corresponds with researchers and other clients on the HSRP's work

Sebastian holds a master’s degree (Magister Artium) in political science and modern history from the University of Freiburg, Germany. His research interests include the nexus between governance and human security in developing countries, trans-and sub-national conflict dynamics, conflict terminations, and foreign policy analysis. His master’s thesis focused on non-state groups as security actors in fragile states. Sebastian spent a year studying at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he took courses at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research. Prior to joining HSRP, Sebastian completed an internship at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. He also worked as faculty adviser for the University of Freiburg’s delegation to the National Model United Nations in New York and volunteered as vice-editor-in-chief of 360°, Germany’s first nationwide student academic journal.
